ramnad
Ramanathapuram, also known as Ramnad or Mugavai, is a coastal district in the southern part of the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The district is known for its strong connection to the Hindu epic Ramayana and is home to the major pilgrimage center of Rameswaram.
Geography
Location: The district is bordered by the Sivaganga and Pudukkottai districts to the north, the Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar districts to the west, the Palk Strait to the east, and the Gulf of Mannar to the south.
Islands: An east-west chain of low islands and shallow reefs, including the famous Pamban Bridge and Adam's Bridge (Rama Setu), connects the district to the island nation of Sri Lanka.
Climate: The region has a hot and dry climate for most of the year, with relief coming during the northeast monsoon season in November and December.
Biosphere Reserve: The Gulf of Mannar is a significant marine biosphere reserve, containing rich coastal biodiversity, including coral reefs, sea grasses, and the highly endangered dugong (sea cow).
History
Formation: Modern Ramanathapuram district was formed in 1910 by combining portions of the Madurai and Tirunelveli districts. It was formerly a much larger district and was referred to as "Ramnad" during the British period.
Rule: The region was governed by the Sethupathy kings before falling under the control of various powers, including the Marathas and the Nawab of Carnatic. The British took administrative control in 1795 and abolished the Zamindari system in 1892.
Bifurcation: On March 15, 1985, the district was trifurcated, which led to the creation of the Sivagangai and Virudhunagar districts.
Economy
Agriculture and fisheries: The district is considered drought-prone, with the economy largely dependent on agriculture and fishing. The primary source of irrigation is the northeast monsoon.
Industry: While industrial activity is limited, the district is the top chili pepper producer in Tamil Nadu, thanks to the cultivation of the unique Ramnad Mundu chilli, which has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
Other products: Other economic activities include handloom weaving, coir-making, and the manufacture of products from palmyra leaves.
Development: In 2018, the Government of India classified Ramanathapuram as one of the country's most underdeveloped districts.
